De vuelta!

Oral and written exams are complete. The last conversation classes and talleres are happening as I write. We are, a la vez, excited and sad about our imminent departure from Cuernavaca. Our students have experienced so much of what Cuernavaca and the Cuauhnahuac Instituto de Idiomas has to offer. We have seen palaces and churches, homes and ruins. We have eaten mamey and chamoy, mole and enchiladas.

And why, might one ask, did we choose to come to Mexico? Why not go to Spain to work on our Spainish? We came to Mexico to learn more about our neighbors and their culture, language, and passion for sharing all that makes them who they are. Our students seem to better understand now why Taco Bell is not really Mexican food. Our students seem to better understand now why Profes. Kunze and Pereda have spent so much time trying to teach us their lengua materna with patience, care and purpose. Our students now know that our neighbors to the south are not just the caricatures we see in movies or on television; they are a people of great history, warmth and education who, like us, struggle to understand where the world is heading.

Thank you all so much for participating in our experience by sending in questions and comments and by simply perusing what it is we have had to offer as a glimpse of Cuernavaca, Mexico. ¡Muchisimas Gracias! and we look forward to seeing everyone Stateside!

Hmmmm.... I think Megan and Michael may have some issues with snakes...

Well, we can hardly believe that our time here is nearly up! We had a very busy weekend and I am slowly getting El Mercado, El Jardin Etnobotanico, Teotihuacan, La Basilica and several other pages updated. The internet is not super consistent here, so I apologize for the delay!

Today we will celebrate Alex H.’s 17th birthday with some 30 kids at the orphange in the colonia Chipitlan. We bought a large cake, a couple of piñatas and some gifts for the kids to make it extra fun. I hope to have pics or video by tomorrow.

This weekend we climbed pyramids, saw the evidence of incredible Catholic devotion, and had some real “kid” time at the mall. Steve Martin dubbed in Spanish is an interesting experience to say the least. The kids seem to be in a good groove now and several would love to return this summer for a longer stay.

We hear it is a bit chilly again in CO just in time to welcome us back. I think we will miss our days of mid-80s and lots of sun….

Hemos llegado!

Hemos llegado en Cuernavaca y hemos pasado un día muy largo. Salimos de CSS a las 3 de la mañana y llegamos a las casas de nuestras familias a las 4 de la tarde! Las casas son bonitas y las familias son amables – qué buena combinación! Hace MUCHO calor aquí pero, gracias a Dios, no hay muchos moscos. Mañana debemos tener más info nueva para ustedes, pero para ahora, ustedes pueden leer un poco de los aztecas…

We have arrived in Cuernavaca after a very long day. We left CSS at 3 a.m. and arrived at our homestays at 4 p.m.! THe houses are nice and the families are too – a great combination! It is very hot here, but thankfully there are not many mosquitos. Tomorrow we will have more info for you guys, but for now you can read a little about the Aztecs..
